Recent figures from the Korea Casino Association indicate that the country’s 16 foreigner-only casinos are returning back to growth in the wake of the political tensions between China and South Korea in 2017.

However, this rise was primarily driven by an uptick in visitors from elsewhere in Asia.

While Chinese visitation continued to fall due with declines of 3.2 percent in January and 5.2 percent in February, an increase in visitors from Japan and Taiwan saw overall visitor levels rise by 1.6 percent in the first two months of the year reaching 366,000.

“Chinese visitors are still the biggest group of customers at foreigners-only casinos, but their number continues to fall,” said a spokesperson for the association.

“We are seeing a turnaround this year, thanks to a steady increase of tourists from Japan.”

GGR in January and February rose by 15.9 per- cent year on year, coming in at KRW204.8bn ($191.6m).
