Maldonado city council has signed-off on plans for the modernisation and restoration of the San Rafael Hotel in Punta del Este.
The $400m project by Italian firm Grupo Cipriani will see the creation of an 183,360sqm complex, designed by well-known architect Rafael Viñoly, which will include a casino.
The San Rafael hotel has been closed since 2011, and was acquired by Cipriani Group for more than $40m in February.
The project will see the construction of two 100m horizontal towers perpendicular to each other, along with the $200m restoration and refurbishment of the Tudor-style hotel, which first opened in 1948.
Casa Cipriani San Rafael will include a 100-room hotel, a casino, ten restaurants, an event space capable of hosting a thousand people, a convention centre, along with a culinary-school and spa.
The new proposal received the backing of 25 of the city’s 31 councillors, while the local government has established a maximum period of 180 days to begin construction once the relevant permit is granted. Councillors also approved the purchase of an additional 1,400sqm of council-owned land for $1.6m.
Cipriani Group has already invested significantly in Uruguay and built a $40m five-star hotel and casino in La Barra in December 2003.
