Estoril Sol, which operates casinos in Estoril, Lisbon and Póvoa de Varzim, has implemented a ‘simplified layoff’ policy at its land based properties.

The majority of the company’s staff will either have their employment contracts temporarily suspended or will see a reduction in their hours. The three casinos have been closed since 14 March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company said its subsidiary, Estoril Sol Digital, will continue to offer online gaming and betting. Nevertheless, online operators in the country may soon be forced to suspend their operations after Portuguese legislators approved Bill-326 at the start of April.

The new legislation aims to establish “partial or total limitations on access to online gaming platforms” during the country’s ongoing state of emergency. The government has yet to announce the details of the specific measures it plans to introduce.
