The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, is set to benefit from the construction of a mixed-use entertainment facility adjacent to its beachfront property.

Initial plans for the R1.3bn (circa $109m) were brought forward in 2016 but abandoned the same year after Boardwalk Casino owners, Emfuleni Resorts failed to acquire an extended gambling license from the Eastern Cape Gaming Board.

However general manager of the Boardwalk Hotel property, Mike van Vuuren, confirmed at a media ceremony that construction on the revitalised project is slated to begin in September after finally gaining the relevant regulatory approvals.

The development will include a raft of retail experiences alongside high-quality event space as the operators look to make the beachfront area the premier leisure destination on the Eastern Cape to supplement the casino space, the only regulated gaming area in Port Elizabeth.
