Wynn Resorts’ new $2.1bn (€1.9bn) Boston Harbour casino is set to open in June 2019 after clearing regulatory hurdles. Executives of the US casino operator confirmed the date with the Massachusetts’ Gaming Commission on 18 August.
[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident of Wynn Boston Harbor Robert DeSalvio said construction is under way at the Everett site, with the company planning on hiring 250 workers by the end of 2016. Eventually a total of 4,000 workers are expected to be employed in constructing the casino resort and 24-storey hotel, which sits just five miles from Boston’s financial district and Logan International Airport and Work started on the project after Wynn obtained a waterfront development permit from the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) at the beginning of August.
The permit was awarded following an unsuccessful appeal by the city of Somerville in July, which argued that the casino would worsen traffic and harm air quality. Construction of the casino was temporarily postponed, but was able to begin after a hearing officer for the DEP ruled in Wynn Resorts’ favour.
Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone says officials are considering filing a separate appeal in Superior Court.
